St Michael’s wins Best Devon Churchyard Award

CPRE Devon (The Campaign to Protect of Rural England) have just announced their annual churchyards awards. And the winners are St Michael’s Alphington.

Through they year their judges visited 31 different churchyards, and announced the winners at their Annual gleral meeting at the RHS Garden in Rosemoor, North Devon.

The Annual Award from CPRE is given to churchyards which are well-managed, providing a peaceful haven for both people and wildlife. They look for churchyards which strike a balance between being an area of peace and contemplation but also allowing nature to flourish. They look for places which actively encourage and help to sustain wildlife, creating an environment which is welcoming to all.

The team of volunteers in Alphington works through the year with a creative and wide-ranging variety of projects.

Among the many things commended were:

  • bird-feeders
  • the wide variety of trees, shrubs and flowers
  • places for prayer and quiet reflection
  • a wildlife pond
  • bug-hotels
  • an outdoor seating area made from logs
  • a seasonal grass-cutting plan to encourage wildlife and insects
  • a warm welcome in church
  • good signage disabled access
  • a water bowl for dogs

The St Michael’s Team have worked over many years to nurture this beautiful oasis at the heart of the busy community. They hope it will spur them on to do even more in the years to come.
